Diablo 4 continues the long-standing franchise tradition of including a system where players can engage in item gambling with a specific, enigmatic vendor. Known as the Purveyor of Curiosities, this vendor can be located in numerous larger settlements and towns scattered across the vast world map of Sanctuary.

The system in Diablo 4 closely resembles the mechanics of Diablo 3's Blood Shards, which allowed players to exchange them with Kadala for a random piece of gear, with a 10% chance of obtaining a legendary quality item. In Diablo 4, this form of currency is known as Murmuring Obols, and accumulating it remains one of the most effective methods to expedite the process of gearing up your characters. This is especially significant considering the game now incorporates a robust system for extracting legendary aspects and imprinting them onto high-quality rares.

How to Obtain Murmuring Obols

There are numerous ways you can obtain Obols in Diablo 4, most notably by:

  • Completing Events found all across the open world. You will run into these randomly generated events pretty frequently and completing them will award you with a certain amount of Obols. Each open world event in Diablo 4 also has a mastery requirement, and if these requirements are met then you will receive even more Murmuring Obols, along with more gold and items.
  • Completing dungeon events with cursed objects (chest, shrines etc.)
  • Opening Cache rewards gained from completing quests

Note that the default maximum amount of Obols you can carry is 500, and if the limit is exceeded, the remaining Obols will be left on the ground. Luckily, you can increase this maximum capacity by earning Renown and collecting the Altars of Lilith. The Murmuring Obol limit is shared across all of your characters, meaning that you won’t have to go through the hassle on any of your alts.

What are Obols Used for?

As we stated earlier, the main use for Murmuring Obols is to gamble for gear at the Purveyor of Curiosities. Gambling at the vendor is available for the following item slots:

  • Helm
  • Chest
  • Weapons
  • Gloves
  • Pants
  • Boots

All the items have a chance to be of Magic, Rare or Legendary quality, and the item power of the gambled piece of gear depends on your character’s level, but some luck is of course involved in this as well.

Whispering Keys

The other big feature that is tied to the Obols are Silent Chests, which are rare spawns found in the overworld. These chests have a higher chance of dropping quality loot, but are only able to be unlocked by using a Whispering Key. These keys are only available for purchase through Murmuring Obols at the Purveyor of Curiosities, and cost 20 Obols each.

Note that it is important that you always have at least one of these keys in your inventory, as Silent Chests may disappear if you teleport out to buy a key from the merchant before coming back to open them.
