This is my first resin printer. I chose the Sonic Mini over others primarily for its screen life and speed.
The printer is well constructed. The case is plastic, but all of the motion parts are machined aluminum or steel. It uses a linear rail for excellent stability. It does have some UV leakage from the rear of the unit, but I imagine that is an unavoidable effect of ventilating the interior. It does not appear to affect the prints. The unit is extremely quiet while operating.
Using Siraya Tech resins, this printer is capable of amazing detail and dimensional accuracy. I have printed several threaded pieces, and they assemble flawlessly. Due to the LCD pixelation the detail is not perfect, sort of a satin finish, but still several orders of magnitude better than an FDM printer. The prints it produces are perfectly usable as functional parts.
I am happy this version came with an aluminum vat, as reports are that the original plastic vat was cracking and virtually unusable. I also purchased an angled build plate, so basically all of the negatives associated with this printer are addressed. I WOULD like to see Phrozen include the angled plate as standard equipment in the future.
The best way to avoid problems with the FEP is to use a couple drops of 3inOne PTFE lubricant on the film. Wipe it in with a lint free cloth and let it cure. I usually go overnight after a clean up. You will not see any sticking to the film at all. It has zero effect on the print quality. (Thanks to YouTube's Uncle Jessy for this tip.)
Thus far I am extremely satisfied with this purchase, and should I need higher volume output I will definitely consider buying another.
After much research and product testing, I was pleased to decided on the Phrozen Sonic Mini as the model I would be using for in house prototyping and small batch manufacturing. I purchased a single unit as a proof of concept and to aid in designing the printing work area with the intent of adding several units a month as projects ramped up.
Upon receiving the unit, that was Purchased as new. Not a refurbished nor an open box item, purchased as NEW. I was disappointed at the aluminium surfaces lack of cleanliness but as aluminum is a notoriously dirty metal I wrongly assumed it to be a product of mass manufacturing and low quality control. The thought that a company, who has worked to build a reputation for quality in the commercial desktop SLA market would sell off spit shined heavily used items as new didn't even cross my mind at this point.
Following the steps as directed I set up the "new" printer. Immediately from the first test print forward I experienced failure after failure. This was extremely surprising as I had decided upon the Sonic Mini based on previous testing with a unit. After many hours, and expenditure of expensive resins and cleaning products trouble shooting I was able to print partial successes. Oddly though these required exposure times 4 to 5 times the length I had expected from this machine. These prints were only Partially successful and would always require a complete draining, cleaning and filtering of the resin vat as many fragments were left floating in or stuck to the vat, and causing enough damage to the FEP to necessitate replacements to avoid possible FEP failure.
I have spent the past week trying to reach any tech support or sales support, at this point ANY one at the company to help with the issues as I had not yet suspected the fact I had been sent a unit with close to end of life consumable components. After reaching out to hobbyists and enthusiast forums I realized just how dim and striated the LCD test was as compared to what a NEW unit should perform like. Once that realization dawned on me further examination shows that even the longer lived components such as the ball screw are exceptionally worn, even more than the well used unit I had borrowed to test with in the beginning.
At this Point I have yet to receive any reply from the multiple contacts I have reached out to at Phrozen. In attempting to calibrate printer settings on what I now know, and once realized is painfully obvious is an abused end of life unit I have wasted many hours of both working and personal time as well as considerable money wasted in resins, cleaning chemicals, disposable PPE items, etc..
I am extremely disappointed, I had prior to this felt great about the decision to use the Phrozen Sonic Mini as the machine we built our SLA prototyping and manufacturing department, after getting hands on time with a well maintained high hour count sonic mini and time with other monochromatic DLP solutions it seemed like the Perfect match. Honestly it may still be, but so far the combined experience of zero reply from any of the numerous attempts to reach anyone in the company combined with the aggravation of lost time trouble shooting, and loss in unnecessary waste of consumables.
Hopefully, Phrozen will see and Reply to this as the other channels seem to go nowhere. It may be naive at this point but I am honestly hopeful that this is simply an unfortunate fluke and that Phrozen will see that it is made right. After months of research and planning I was up until now very excited to move forward with the addition of considerable and speedy SLA printing capabilities to our company.
Pros;
Excellent print fidelity
Value for money and a good quality product overall
easy-to-use printer interface touchscreen
An open system means that you have both a learning opportunity and the freedom to alter almost every setting
Freedom to use virtually any resin in the market no lockouts no nonsense forced fake subscription to use a special resin or whatever. Basically, this is the best place to start
Cons;
fep film that comes with the printer should be changed to an nfep, buy this when buying the printer
The printer overhead cover is not very effective at preventing premature polymerization of resin. apply a tint film or spray paint the cover
The usb slot is to the left side instead of the front of the device
no wifi connectivity there are some models that have it but its way too expensive
Overall this is the best device to start using a resin based 3d printer
Pick a slicer and have some fun
