Nice product but didn't meet my needs.

Nice product but didn't meet my needs.
After a day of trial and error, I decided that this 3D scanner wasn't going to be able to do what I wanted it to do. My desire was to scan scale models and miniatures of cars, figures, buildings, aircraft, etc. and be able to 3D print them at different scales. I wanted to be able to scan existing objects so that I would not have to learn 3D model creation (sculpting, drawing, etc.) or at least start with something that was nearly ready to print. I had high hopes for this scanner, but I couldn't get it to work well enough to be satisfied.I tried scanning a 28mm figure, a 1/48 scale automobile, a 1/10 scale articulated figure, and finally a small (about 4" x 4" x 2") scale model of the Alamo. Each time I tried various setting in MFStudio and different ambient lighting. Each time I ended up with a mesh model that was missing some part of the scanned object (a foot or tire, for example) or there was some addition to the mesh that wasn't true to the object. For example, see the attached photo of my Alamo scan. The scanner didn't pick up much of the roof, even when I scanned it at 90 degrees so that the entire roof was visible, and this is what I ended up with after merging three scans. I am not adept at 3D modeling, so trying to fix the scan by editing it with 3D modeling software (blender) was frustrating and time consuming. I finally decided I would have been better off creating my own 3D models from scratch vs. taking the time to scan and edit, and, as previously stated, my goal is to avoid having to learn much about 3D modeling software.

This was my first entry into 3D scanning and I was skeptical. The Matter and Form *seemed* like a good choice, since it has good resolution and the price is better than the other options. I decided to take a chance and if I didn't like it I'd just return it.

The software doesn't come in the box, you have to download it from their website. I don't have a CD drive in my computer anyway. I didn't know where the power button was on the scanner. It's the logo. Kind of different but OK...

I was able to calibrate and to get a good scan of the toy duck it comes with, but the scan didn't have the top or bottom. So you have to scan your object a few times and combine the scans together. This was fairly easy to do in their software. Each scan only took a minute, cleaning up the little bit of noise in each scan took about a minute, then combining them was almost instant. I did spend about an hour playing with different ways to scan the duck before I really liked the combined results.

I was able to mesh and get a nice STL file for my printer. They have a cloud service bevelpix to upload the scans as well. I haven't checked it out yet.

I also scanned this sea shell because I wanted to test these 0.1mm claims. I did this one with "quickScan". My time scanning the duck paid off for the shell. I got the two scans I needed and this result (see picture) in 8 minutes.

My conclusion: 5 stars. I like this machine. It works and it is accurate. I also enjoyed using it. The pictures are my duck scan and print and my sea shell original and scan.

Ce scanner est très bien. Il faut cependant beaucoup s'investir, lire, écouter, réfléchir, tester, étudier, pour obtenir un bon résultat.
Le procédé est lent : entre 1 heure et 3 heures.
